BIKINI KILL

My discovery of the riot girl band Bikini Kill was a definitive moment in my life.

I felt that Bikini Kill's music, lyrics and political leanings matched my own.

At a time that the mainstream media were going on about the post feminist age

Bikini Kill revealed that there are many reasons as to why feminist activism is both

Still relevant and urgent.

Bikini Kill is a band which by example encourages womens' agency

And self expression on their own terms.

Bikini Kill's music bares out the intricacies of subjectivity

And realises that unitary subjectivity is a fantasy;

That just because women feel sidelined and angry

And desire to have women's only spaces

Does not make them man haters;

But rather reveals their desire to create a space in which they can hear their own voices included

In a culture that so often disenfranchises women.

Bikini Kill's music is by turns

Active, energetic, political, emotional, expressive and brilliant.
