For over ten years now, Sonic Youth has been one of my favourite bands.
Their music is evolutionary and almost separate from what's happening in the dominant culture.
Sonic Youth's lyrics are at once smart, poetic, playful, joyful and disturbing.
Their music reminds us that disonance is something to incorporate in our lives,
Not something to shun.
They show us that any note can be turned bad
And that bad can be the most beautiful thing of all.
Kim Gordon once said that there is a particular beauty in seeing things fall apart.
Sonic Youth's music brings out this truth.
Sometimes a throw away lyric,
A guitar hook in a Sonic Youth song
Can move you to look around you and find a new beauty in the world that you never knew was there.
Sonic Youth's music has the ability to tune you into a new sensitivity.
